Facebook spends $19 for WhatsApp

Uber popular messaging app WhatsApp is making the news for one of the many recent acquisitions in the tech world. If you thought it couldn't get any more strange than Sony selling their premium PC line to an investment company, think again!

Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion! As with most of what Facebook does, this purchase is a bit of a mystery, an expensive one no less. Although WhatsApp's popularity is through the roof and they have enjoyed huge growth, Facebook as a chat client really isn't too far behind in terms of usage, so why the purchase?

Why did Facebook purchase WhatsApp?

More than a few are speculating it could be as simple as Facebook obtaining access to see who is in your address book. At the very core of WhatsApp, you are not required to create a login, instead, the messaging service identifies you by your device number. If this is indeed the case, Facebook would have just paid $42 per person, just to see what is in your contacts list.
